OnePlus 6 release date and specs tipped in fresh smartphone leak

A new OnePlus smartphone is already in the works and could arrive as soon as March next year, according to latest rumours.

The disruptive Chinese smartphone maker is – apparently – already plotting a brand new device, despite having only launched its new OnePlus 5T in November. The next handset is expected to be called the OnePlus 6, although the phone remains largely mysterious for now.

Fortunately, a new report from gadget blog GizmoChina sheds some light on the matter. Citing anonymous sources, GizmoChina suggests that the current roadmap for the OnePlus 6 puts the launch “as early as March of 2018”. It goes on to write: “The launch is said to be sometime in the middle of March, with the phone becoming available by the end of the month.”

It’s fair to say that this is quite a frantic pace for flagship launches, given that the OnePlus 5 launched in June this year, and the OnePlus 5T is only one month old. If the March launch is correct, that means we’ll have had three OnePlus flagships in just nine months.

The report also tips that – as expected – the phone will carry Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 845 chipset. This high-end processor is likely to feature in many of next year’s top-tier smartphones, so this isn’t a massive surprise.

However, the report interestingly notes that the OnePlus 6 will be the first OnePlus smartphone to feature a fingerprint sensor built underneath the phone’s glass front. This means the sensor could “easily be installed on the front without having to sacrifice the full-screen design”.

Of course, it’s still very early days, so we need to treat these rumours cautiously. Firstly, there’s no way of us verifying the rumours or sources quoted in the article. Secondly, even if the report is true, it’s entirely possible that OnePlus’ plans could change between now and launch. As always, take this latest leak with a pinch of salt – nothing is confirmed until we hear it through official channels.
